Fall Protection Safety Training
Fall Protection User Awareness Training
This two-hour employee safety training session focuses on the proper use of personal fall protection equipment, in alignment with California OSHA (Cal/OSHA) requirements. This class is designed for all employees who may be exposed to fall hazards in the workplace. The training will provide detailed instruction on the selection, inspection, and proper use of fall protection systems, including harnesses, lanyards, and anchorage points. Curriculum will be based on the regulatory requirements of CCR Title 8, specifically Sections 1670 (Personal Fall Arrest Systems), 1730 (Roofing Work—Fall Protection), 3210 (Guardrails and Toeboards), and 3212 (Floor Openings, Guarding), 3646 (Elevating Work Platforms), 3648 (Aerial Devices) as these sections apply to the employees’ work environments. Emphasis will be placed on hazard recognition, compliance obligations, and safe work practices to reduce the risk of serious injury or fatality due to falls. The training will include instructor-led discussions, visual demonstrations, and a practical component to ensure participants understand and can apply what they have learned. The practical / hands-on component can be customized to the preference of each client.

FALL PROTECTION COMPETENT PERSON SAFETY TRAINING
(FOR SUPERVISORY LEVEL)
OSHA defines competent person as “one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.”
The definition, therefore, has two distinct parts:
- The first – “capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees” comprises a vague concept that many persons might consider themselves qualified to meet. Common sense would dictate that the competent person must have the knowledge, intelligence, and wherewithal to recognize and identify situations and conditions that put workers at risk. Such competence should also include the ability to predict a hazardous situation. Command of the applicable CalOSHA regulations is imperative to meet the Competent Person criteria.
- The second – “who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them [hazards]”. This person must have genuine authority to make changes, stop work, and/or do whatever is necessary to stop / correct the unsafe activity.
This course is a comprehensive, up to eight-hour (total duration is dependent on the attendees’ fall hazard exposures), fall protection Competent Person training course designed for supervisory-level employees responsible for overseeing work at height. This training meets the requirements outlined by Cal/OSHA and focuses on the responsibilities of a “Competent Person” as defined in CCR Title 8, Section 1504.
Participants will gain the knowledge and authority necessary to identify existing and predictable fall hazards, take prompt corrective measures, and ensure proper use of fall protection systems by employees under their supervision.
The course curriculum will include in-depth instruction on the selection, inspection, and enforcement of proper use of personal fall protection equipment. Emphasis will be placed on the legal and practical responsibilities of the Competent Person under California regulations, with specific focus on CCR Title 8 Sections 1670 (Personal Fall Arrest Systems), 1730 (Roofing Work—Fall Protection), 3210 (Guardrails and Toeboards), and 3212 (Floor Openings, Guarding) as they apply to the attendees’ work environment(s).
Training methods include instructor-led presentations, case studies, equipment demonstrations, and hands-on activities to reinforce regulatory knowledge and practical application. Attendees who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate designating them as having completed Fall Protection Competent Person training in accordance with Cal/OSHA guidelines.
NOTE: Each employer must be the designator of the title Competent Person for their selected employees. OSTS can only prepare the attendee(s) to perform the duties of that role.
